Lore & Background
The Blackwell Legacy is a point-and-click adventure game where the player controls Rosa Blackwell, a freelance writer who occasionally writes for a magazine called The Village Eye. After the death of her aunt Lauren, Rosa suffers migraines and encounters a ghost named Joey Mallone, who reveals she is a spirit medium. Joey explains that Rosa's aunt and grandmother both had mental breakdowns after rejecting or quitting their roles as mediums. Rosa must help ghosts who cannot move on, starting with the spirit of a student named Alli Montego. Through investigation, Rosa learns that Alli, JoAnn Sherman, and a third student named Maddy accidentally summoned a restless ghost called the Deacon using a ouija board. Rosa and Joey help Alli move on, then break into Bellevue Hospital to save Maddy from the Deacon. They discover the Deacon was a corrupt priest who murdered people, and his resolution involves being trapped in a cycle of violence; they help him find peace. Rosa learns that her aunt quit being a medium to care for her after her parents died, and Rosa decides to embrace her identity as a medium.
Reader's Guide
The Blackwell Legacy is significant as the first entry in the Blackwell series, establishing the core gameplay and narrative style that would define the franchise. Its success led to the creation of subsequent games in the series. The game was originally developed as freeware under the title Bestowers of Eternity in 2003 before being expanded into a commercial product. It received generally favorable reviews, with an aggregate score of 80% on Metacritic, and won the AGS Award for Best Character Art in 2006. The game's point-and-click mechanics, fully voice-acted dialogue, and emphasis on characterization set a standard for later adventure games by Wadjet Eye Games.
