Kathy Rain

Kathy Rain is a point-and-click adventure game from Swedish studio Clifftop Games, published by Raw Fury. The story takes place in 1995 and centers on a college journalism student named Kathy, who travels back to her fictional hometown of Conwell Springs after her grandfather Joseph dies. She begins looking into the strange events surrounding his death and, in doing so, faces her own difficult past. A sequel, *Kathy Rain 2: Soothsayer*, came out in 2025.

The plot kicks off at Joseph’s funeral, where Kathy reconnects with her grandmother for the first time since childhood. Her grandmother reveals that Joseph had been in a vegetative state with no medical explanation before his death. Intrigued, Kathy starts digging. She finds a tape Joseph left in the police archives, which leads her to a case he had been investigating: the 1975 drowning of a child prodigy painter named Lily Myers, ruled a suicide. Most of Lily’s artwork was stolen shortly after being bought by art collector Charles Wade, a former colleague of Joseph’s in the USAF. Kathy also comes across an overdeveloped photograph showing three strange lights that look like will-o’-the-wisps, along with a red flower. She later learns the flower is a Red Scythe, an endangered species that can cause hallucinations.

Both threads point to the local Church of the Holy Trinity, whose symbol matches the three lights in Joseph’s photo. Kathy suspects the priest, Father Isaac, is running a cult that uses Red Scythes to manipulate people like Joseph and Lily. Her college roommate Eileen Summers shows up to help but gets caught by Isaac while trying to sneak into the church. Kathy is arrested during her own attempt to rescue Eileen, but she escapes, frees Eileen, and exposes Isaac for kidnapping and stealing Lily’s paintings. However, Eileen ends up in a catatonic state, just like Joseph was.

In jail, Kathy confronts Isaac, who reveals his connection to the Crimson One—a bald man in a red suit who has been influencing people for years and appears in Kathy’s dreams and visions. The Crimson One often visited Lily, who eventually rejected her painting talent and, it turns out, committed suicide through her brother Nathan. Kathy tracks down Nathan, who leads her to a deep pit in Conwell Woods surrounded by Red Scythes. There she finds the Crimson One and descends into the pit to save Eileen.
